I have MANY pics stored on my hard drive, dating from years ago. Can the quality of these pics deteriorate over time the same way VHS movies do? If so, what can I do to preserve these pics? Thanks for your help.

wnyguy.. i dont think so.. i think when you access them again.. they will be the exact same as the day you left them ok.. i think... but not sure. as i am not a net. tech. my son is, and does all my stuff and is excellent at it. but is over yonder in vegas right now. but i think it is if you copy them like zillion times they start to get vierd. but it takes a zillion so it not to worry much about... but i think for just storing.. you are ok.. i am not pos.. but i think you are going to be happy..if you take out the hard drive..just protect it from dust and such..as far as i know. you should be ok. @->-daisyhubs.

if you take it out for storage.. to persevere it is not much diff than anything else.. but use a sm cardboard box. so it absorbs moisture. . and sm plastic bag to protect from dust.. i would wrap the bag shut.. not zip lock.. and toss in one of those sm, packs we see in all the china crap to keep out moisture.. lol.. no direct sunlight ..i am still trying to format a old one to get pics back.lol.. good luck. @->-daisyhubs..

It can happen that due to copying or transferring to other storage media (new computer f.i.) or inserting the pictures in word or power-point documents, bits get lost.
And as computers work with single-minded futility, one missing item, and nothing works.
If you download a program and, let's say the lithuanian on-line help is corrupted (contains an error), the whole bl..dy thing would not start.
Just like you could not read the whole book because of one typo.
Human brain works in quite a different way than a computer...
This also can happen with images. Generally it does not happen, but bad luck, it will happen with the images you specially care for...
What CAN happen is a damage in the storage medium. Mechanical damage of a hard-disk is possible. Most of magnetic storage media, like floppy disks can lose their magnetic orientation with the years and become unreadable after some time.
CD or DVD can get scratched or lose the reflectant metal coating and can lose data or, if the boot sector or FAT (kind of table of contents) gets damaged, the rest of the information is lost as well. You can retrieve the information with specialist tools (paying specialist prices as well) but generally speaking, you will not go through all the expenses for just a pair of naked titties, however magnificent...

Thank You Daisy,
I do admire your pictures. I will look in my archives. Otherwise, if you are member, you can retrieve your posts, but it is a tedious procedure. And generally, the historic posts have a lousy resolution, that's why I just admire them in passing, mostly.
However, I am not an IT specialist. Just teaching dentistry at university. But I am a pretty good autodidact, from statistics to plumbing...
So if ever you need help, just give me a yell!
