Since the recession hit, restaurant's from fast food like the golden arches to Chilies. Their food quality going down while their prices stay almost the same.

I notice it more in 1 off restaurants then in chains, but it just seems to me Id rather have consistancy in my food. I for 1 would rather have GOOD food that costs 1 or 2 bucks more rather then keep the same price by using lower quality foods.

Whats your thoughts on this one? Would you rather have a cheap meal that doesnt taste as good or spend a little more and get the same great taste you were used too?

I want good food when I go out, even if it costs a couple of dollars more. If I want "cheap" food, I stay home and cook. My food is good and cheap, but I am no gourmet!

blue how are ya my friend.. i totaly agree with you .. what we see is not just the quality go to crap.. but we also see smalar candy bars for same price.. its all about profit.. and sometimes they dont watch the ball ok.. its not good biz to change your product quality.. it chases loyal costomers away to a yonder competitor .. but they dont see this or care.. its about profit only to them.. and in the future.. the younger croud does not know the differance and will like the product never knowing or realizing what time it is.. but the company will still keep the profits up.. so they are looking long term stratagy.. not about loosing a few.. but in time.. gianing more profit in time and to blend in... so its give less. .that saves a dime.. and give less quality as well .. now thats 2 dimes saved.. and a penny saved is a penny earned.. if a few wonder off.. they dont care.. its all about making profit.. then the industry one is in.. they dont care what we think.. but it backfires on them from time to time.. we feel there is no value.. that hurts them or like you say we are so so used to what we like and want we go elswhare.. smart companies. change it back if they notice this.. thats why you cant get new coke anymore..lol.. its trial and error for them.. and sometimes its us they use as ginnypigs to see what works and not a critiques... its all about profit.. in what you are saying.. they dont see due to gluttony of greed that blinds people to what time it is.. that they could quite easily loose profits.. if they do they will change it back.. if not.. its less for more.. its about money.. not your dinner.... so i agree.. give the extra buck and treat youself dont cheat youself is good rule.. but if you are on that program.. why are you eating out anyway.. thats why i learned to cook good.. i have over 17 yrs on the line.. cooking is simple.. good things with good things make a great thing.. see stacking dominos there.. to cook good... shop good first.. ya pay the extra buck.. and save from loosiing money to thier profit games by cooking it yourself..
minty.. a secret we use to make anything taste good in general.. some needs adjusting. but works on most anything ok... use garlic powerder, salt, onion powder, parcly for looks ..put that on almost anything and cook it slow and it will come out gourmet or close enough.. otherwise buy one of the new space ovens.. tri way of cooking.. anything in one of those is 5 star all the way also..
blue.. also realize that if you are talking produce items on that plate.. in the summer you can get great stuff.. but in winter its all good looking but mealy crap out of mexico and that way way makes a differance as well .. sometimes a reastarants food quality goes way down due to time of yr ok.. try a tomato from cali in the summer.. and one off the la market from mexico in the winter.. i also owned a produce company for over 20 yrs.. and sold produce to over 75 local reastarants for yrs and yrs..
want to eat good.. ck out the items i posted in recipies.. easy and fast and good.. quick lunches. ..here on the oasis. we eat like kings every day.. no one cooks but me..
minty. you can keep it great and affordable to stay in if you try that basic blend we call it ok.
blue i am with ya bro.. i rather have what i expect and look forward to also.. not paying and its not the same.. consistancy is everything for a reastarant really.. it avoids what you are saying that is bad for biz.. and it controls food cost also if you know exataly what each plate is costing to put out.. waste kills on a profit there and is out of control time to time for a reastarant.. but ya i vote same as you ... if you got something that works.. dont fix it.. instead offer good affordable appitizers or something. .to make more. not mess up a proven money maker.. some people dont know what they are doing.. if i had a reastarant now.. i would sell it.. and oopen a burger king on the interstate.. or if i kept it. i would give my costomers what they want and install a drive in for real meals off my steam table. instead of crap , but they want a drive in.. people like you and i are looking at it old school. now days most people are to in a hurry and dont appriciate ambiance of a place as where we would.. daisy pointed out to me the other day that one of them was offering.. call it in and we will bring it out to your car. on tv. think it was applebees.. someone is thinking out there.. i told her see some of them are evoling to what costomer wants and probalby putting in drive ins to keep thier reastarant alive.. as i have cooked for so many yrs on the line.. i dont go out much unless its a lunch when i am in town couple times a month.. i cook better than or as good as any i seen so why give them a profit when i dont need to.. also i cook different than most do.. most cook dinner for all same thing.. here you can order what you want.. and i cook it all at home like downtown.. i have a real set up kitchen.. and cook dinner several different items at once at home almost easyer to me cos i am so used to cooking that way.. also blue.. its not since the recession hit.. its part of the prob why we are in a recession actally.... the corps to greedy and glutton... who wants to go out to pay more for less.. and that cost jobs.. and inflation and helps rescession not makes things better.. @->-daisyhubs.

those new tri cooking ovens kick ass.. i have had a few of them for a few yrs now.. use that basic blend on anything and put in one of those.. even frozen. and it just comes out like 5 star reastarant every time.. and also better for you as well as taste.. cos all the grease is not in the food as well ..i highly reconmend one of those if you are not the best cook or even if you are.. they rock..

if you know what you are doing.. and ware to shop.. you should be able to make a 4 star plate for a buck a plate.. 5 star.. is 2 bucks a plate.. but ya worth the extra buck to eat sirloin..the plates i make cost one to two bucks. but would sell for 8-20 a plate downtown.. but i shop real stratigicaly..or use my own livestock at times . you have to realy know what you are doing to get your plate cost to that and still be eating steak as i do.. i have cooked for yrs. and managed a few also..after 15 yrs and several places.. i was asked to cook for a summer for a freind.. i though i had a good idea of it all .. but i learned more six months working beside him.. than i had with all the others combined... attention to detail pays off if you own a reastarant as well as appying all the tricks of the trade..its better to give a tad more for same price and go after volume.. then to be like the rest loosing money by playing games.. cos it kills value.. and looses costomers.. the trick is to keep the old ones and get the new ones as well.. also blue.. everythihg is up all over due to gas prices.. they are paying much for for produce now and everything else.. when i started lemons were seven a box.. now they are 27 a box.. see what i mean... they also pass it on like everyone else.. food cost is amazingly hard to keep on buget for a shop.. what they are doing in what you say.. is keep the price the same somehow with all the extra charges hitting them but not to the costomer also.. but it will go up t the 2 buck value menu quickly if gas prices keep climbing..... @->-hubs.

if you want better for the buck more.. go to carls and not mcdogballs would be my advice..or cook it at home.. @->-hubs.

its 4 a gallon in cali.. usualy 40 cents higher then rest of nation.. and thats for reg.. premium is much more.. and it has hit everyone and everything here..our tourism and biz are suffering hard due to it.. as is everyone else.. so volume is way down accross the board in this state for a biz.. we have way more biz laws in this state than most.. lots of biz are leaving this state.. in the old days.. the beverly hillbillys were coming in.. now you look at a interstate at the boarder.. and the chain of uhaul trucks leaving the state show its the other way around... not good .. our laws here do not promote biz.. but hurt it actally compared to other states.. and many are setting up shop in other states and moving out of cali every day... theres more than meets the eye in the prices we all pay for things.. our comp laws are crazy here as are the smog laws.. lots of factors make price of product.. that most never understand unless they understand biz extremely well.. @->-hubs.

once again.. minty got the right answer.. if ya go out be prepared to toss a couple extra bucks at it... but to do it right on a buget.. toss the extra buck at a good steak or something eating in.. either way.. treat yourself dont cheat youself is right program..@->-hubs.

blue.. our local dallar double burger at mcds or burger king are not a dallar anymore.. its 119 or 129.. and ya i rather toss the extra quarter at it and not see the product change..they did it for volume..and cos the costomers are middle class going broke.. to keep the balance from sales to avalible cash in the field to match some.. if you notice.. the true pros who have done the research.. are taxing the extra quarter and not changing what we all have become spoiled on and love.. its just a tad smallar is all sometimes.. if i get 2 rodeo burgers.. its costly compared to 2 buck doubles and a side of dallar onion rings and ask for the bbq sause... and water. i get my coke across the street at the gas staition.. so its how you order as well.. i get exta cos one is a double the other isnt.. for the same price... work smart folks as well as work hard.. @->-daisyhubs.

a gp in a shop is not in the meal.. the gross profit is in side items.. a coke lets say.. nickle for cup. 3 cents for top.. penny for straw.. nickle for coke.. nickle for sevice.. 3 cents for electric.. thats.. thats 22 cents for a product they charge you 1.79 for.. meals have a third is cost to price.. coke its.. 100 percent and more profit.. so we dont care if you buy a meal or not.. but we push the cokes bigtime is how it really is.. its all about biz folks.. and profit margins.. no one cares what you eat.. but we care what you drink..lol.. need a side of thighs with that.. i mean frys.. @->-daisyhubs.

let me give ya another heads up ok.. the reastarant biz is one of the extreme toughest biz to be in right now... only two things will work actally.. you have to marry old and new.. as you run the inside.. you got to run the outside.. a frend of mine and me figured out.. cup and go.. thats a biz whare ya serve meals.. good ones off your steam table on the quick in drive though.. so if ya tired of crap you can get a good home cooked meal instad for a buck more or same price... people are tired of piza , burgers and crap.. they want good home cooked meals for a great value in a drive thew fasiion... that is why applebees is offering what they are.. my frend and i figured out cup and go yrs ago....otherwise invest in a burger king or a carls on a interstate and that is the future of reastarants.. ok... there ya go.. there is a million dallar idea i assure you .. i got lots of inventions and such and ideas.. not critisizem and over educated blindness...

WOW! This is what I mean about my head spinning with Hubs' responses. But what a ride! Thanks for the spice advice. I use a lot of them. Use to have one of those ovens...loved it. But I found I can do pretty well with microwave and toaster oven. Minimal cooking on the stove top. Just can't get myself to fork out $100 for an oven. I know it's a great appliance, just can't do it. I too cook more at home than go out. I found that the only food I NEED to have someone else make is Chinese. I do great with Mexican, Italian, and "everyday American" food. But try as I might, I screw up the Chinese everytime. Simple stir fry and Kung Pao Chicken are the only ones that come out right. It kills me to get lazy and order pizza. They charge so much for a simple food, but they are the only ones that deliver. Guess that is why there are so many pizza places still making a go of it. I'm not a really bad cook, just get tired of the same old, same old. There are a couple of recipes I could contribute. Thought of you, Hubs and Daisy, the other night with Master Chef tryouts when the guy served the sushi on the woman's body. I recalled most of your recipes used Daisy as the serving apparatus.
Did find one restaurant that has a pretty good deal. Ruby Tuesdays has a combo that is the salad bar with mini burgers (turkey, chicken, or beef), or soup...love the broccoli/cheese soup...for just a dollar or two more than the salad bar alone. Get them to box up the burgers and you get another whole meal. I also watch the sell by dates in the meat/poultry section of the supermarket. The day of or before the date, usually the packages are marked down to half or more of the original price. Either use it up or freeze it. Still good quality, just cheaper.

minty.. after managing a super market for 20 yrs.. yes.. if we run out of say hamburger on sale late in the day.. we grind up some more and put it out.. but what doesnt sell that night.. goes mark down the next morning.. the paks are priced at say one dallar and something.. with a dollar off sticker on them.. grab the ones that are under 125.. thats less than a quarter a lb..buy handfulls of them and freez... ya its how ya shop.. couponing is fabulous as well if doubled and on sale.. hell they pay me to walk out of the store with it for free.. so ya.. its great to see ya watchin the ball and how to shop.. it so makes a differance in your plate cost.. and leaving moneys for other things.. like i said.. a penny saved is a penny earned.. just good biz.. actally we dont use many spices in america...as in say indea they do.. most i cant even pronouce... in america we use a herb rack that we call a spice rack for some reason.. but the differance from a spice to a herb is this ok.. a spice is a seed of a plant.. the peper usualy.. a herb is the rest of the plant.. so we use mostly herbs in america and not spices but call it a spice rack and not accuratuly a herb rack.. strange. but true.. if ya going to mexico or italy ya you got to adjust a tad. adding cummin or red pepper.. or oregano and not parsly... but if ya want good without a space oven i call them.. then use a crock pot.. or use basic blend with water in a pan covered on the stove top.. cook real slow and it will be fabulous.. i watch a few of them shows to and ramsey alot.. taking things serious makes tons of differance and atten to detail is everything.. daisy is not the seving apperatus.. she is the nudist in the background..why post a boring background when i can post her right..lol. the paper plate is the apparatus.. my cook book.. titled.. how to make any paper plate look good... meals for one to two bucks a plate,, i started posting.. but why give it away for free.. when no one looks there.. i would love to see that weak link of the site take off more..and ya.. chinnese is a tad harder.. i try to avoid it some as well..i dabble in it also.. but the place i go to she always gives me a entire dinner extra for free each time so i cant make it as well or get so much for the price as i get there... you have made some just monumental comments here that i would like to point out and hope others see what you have typed.. yes the way you shop is everything...

charge so much for simple food.. this is monumental.. whats happening here is this ok.. if i can make it cheapest as posable.. and sell it at a good price and the people are to lazy or dont know how to make it or just busy.. they will buy it.. but heres the thing.. simple is affordable to make.. but sells at good price... so it has the highest gp.. gross profit.. and its biz first. industry in second.. so thats a win win.. mexican food has the best gp in the biz far as i have been tought.. used to cook and mangage a mex reastarant for 3half yrs.. lots of mess and fun.. grabing the plates right out of oven bare handed one after anotehr..lol..another great thing you said.. ya if ya go to the right place, you not only get your dinner.. but yes get lunch the next day as well.. now thats good for plate cost there.. you a smart woman..you playing win win cards all over the place.. nicely done.. and all good ideas your sharing.. i do all those myself.. now let me show you this ok..

we are told very young.. you get a education and work hard and ya will be ok..all this ever did for me is keep me a good broke slave..tearany.. that way of thinking is total crap.. propaganda and a lie... it will destroy our country and it has... while others dont think that way.. they are doing well... what we have to do is.. work SMART.. as we work hard.. thats why the big 3 auto makers are scrambling or bankrupt.. they work hard.. but not smart as they do it.. and it has cost thousands of jobs.. as japan works smart and makes all the cars now.. to middeman and be a think tank as america is today is very wrong...cos it only protects ten percent.. the rest are middle class going broke , you have to be a industral nation or your done for the masses.. but in thier greed they dont care about us.. greed and glutton is .. all else shoved aside as they smirk at us thinking they so great. but they are terable people.. just ask your layer about it.. he understands it fully cos its the game he plays ok.. pure greed.. while some people are waiting to long for things to happen in thier lives or sharking on us.. others are working smart and hard as minty and i do.. i can see..we dont wait.. but go out in the water and grab that fish if we have to in life...fishing poles dont work well, again propaganda.. but manhandling that fish out of the water may be a tad harder but always pays off..work smart folks.. as well as hard..

Thanks for the profile...didn't even have to pay the ecentric lady with the crystal ball $10. Funny how paths cross...seems we have very similar backgrounds and varied experiences. At least for me, that justifies my well "rounded"- ness.
Blue balls...you had a great idea for a thread. It has made me realize why the few places I do go out to eat at are still making a go of it in this economy. T. Bell has good value for what you get, even though they have gone up about 20 cents accross the board. Also we have a local, family run, old style, drive-in restaurant that provides fabulous food at an excellent price. If you go to locally established places vs. the chains you probably spend about the same or less and not only is the food fresher/better, but you are supporting the local economy a bit more than letting it trickle back in after going into the corporate pockets first. Some places I don't go to isn't so much that they are now charging a few more dollars, as it is they act like we HAVE to pay their prices because they are the superior brand, at least in their own minds. That's why if you go off the beaten path, you might find some hidden treasures of taste and value you didn't know you couldn't live without now. This is a great time to try new things and places.

here is a good tip to save a few dimes.. never buy fresh little packs of rosemary.. cos its so evergreen and heat and drout tolorant..they use it in front of lots and lots of places for landscaping.. its all over.. free.. use the baby fresh shoots.. @->-hubs.
