split pea soup
bacon few slices, diced
1 lb split peas
1 ham bone (with some meat left on)we use leftover from easter and christmas dinners
1 carrot, peeled and diced
1 onion, diced
1 potato, peeled and diced
1 celery rib, diced
1 clove garlic, diced
8 c. low sod. chicken broth doesnt need the salt
salt to taste at the end as ham makes salty
pepper to taste
1.in soup pot cook bacon remove and save drain some bacon fat.
2. saute onions , carrots , celery ,and garlic in bacon fat.
3.add ham bone ,split peas, potatoes and chicken stock.
4.cover and cook on low 2 1/2 to 3 hrs till done.
check to make sure theres always some liquid you may need to add more broth.
5.remove ham bone if have any left over ham can add it salt and pepper to taste
6.serve in soup bowls top with bacon chips
can also make in slow cooker crockpot just thro
all in and cook for 10 hrs or so on low.
