apple dumplings
2 1/2 c . flour 1 tsp. salt 8 tbsp.light brown sugar 1 c. shortening 1/2 c. mixed dried fruit nuts any kind you like chopped (optional) 2 tbsp. butter 1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon 6 small apples 1 egg ,beaten
oven preheated to 400*
1. in bowl mix flour ,salt and 2 tbsp sugar. cut in shortening until resembles crumbs. stir in 5 to 6 tbsp. cold water until dough holds together set aside .
2. in small bowl mix dried fruit , butter, 4 tbsp sugar and 1 tsp cinnamon and nuts if adding.
3. peel apples core but dont go all the way to bottom leave a bit .press dried fruit mix into holes. grease baking pan.
4.on floured surface roll out dough with floured rolling pin you want to make 6 squares big enough to go around your apples.
5.on wax paper or plate mix remaining cinnamon and sugar roll apples in it. center apple onto a square brush edges with egg .
6.bring dough up and around apple seal edges. place in greased pan . repeat with remaining apples.
7. brush dumplings with egg . bake 50 to 60 min. until pastry is golden and apples are tender when pierced with knife.
okay you can do like that or also make this sauce and pour over before you bake them.or just have sauce after they baked.

3 c. water 2 c. sugar 1 tsp. vanilla 2 tbsp. butter can make a cinnamon sauce instead by leaving out vanilla and adding some cinnamon.
In a saucepan, combine water, sugar, vanilla and reserved butter. Place over medium heat, and bring to a boil in a large saucepan. Boil for 5 minutes, or until sugar is dissolved. Carefully pour over dumplings. then bake for 50 to 60 minutes till golden and apple is tender.
to serve put in bowl and drizzle with sauce from pan .
also if you dont want to go throu making pastry can use refrigerated pie crusts from store just roll out some and cut up .
